The Familiar Stranger
Monday, October 23, 2006

Perhaps it was the fear of being overwhelmed by emotions,
that might lead to streams of tears rolling,
that might lead to saying, "i miss you",
that might lead to me thinking of changing my life.

Perhaps it was the "belief" that reminiscing brings me to nowhere,
seeing the pictures that we've taken years and months then,
thinking of, though knowing each other's existence for years,
yet as little time spent together.

Perhaps it was the thought that you didn't really impact my life,
your presence never felt since i was a child of four,
nothing has changed since you departed two years then,
just like when i left when i was four.

Perhaps i really thought i could cry like any others on the day you left,
the day you left for good.
Yet, all i asked myself was, who's the lady lying in there, so beautiful, so fragile.
So familiar, stranger.

A familiar stranger.

From meow to the familiar stranger.
The familiar stranger who was and once part of my life.

Never Gonna Leave Your Side
Tuesday, October 17, 2006

While listening to Class 95, this song caught my attention. Nothing specified. Perhaps, it was the bitter-sweet feeling that this song has.

Never Gonna Leave Your Side
Daniel Bedingfield

I feel like a song without the words
A man without a soul
A bird without its wings
A heart without a home
I feel like a knight without a sword
The sky without the sun
cos you are the one

I feel like a ship beneath the waves
A child that lost its way
A door without a key
A face without a name
I feel like a breath without the air
And every day's the same
since you've gone away

I gotta have a reason to wake up in the morning
You used to be the one that put a smile on my face
There are no words that could describe how I miss you
and I miss you everyday
yeah

and I'm never gonna leave your side
and I'm never gonna leave your side again
still holding on girl
I won't let you go
cos when I'm lying in your arms
I know I'm home

They tell me that a man can lose his mind
Living in the pain
The call in times gone by
The crying in the rain
You know I've wasted half the time
And I'm on my knees again
'till you come to me
yeah

I gotta have a reason to wake up in the morning
You used to be the one that put a smile on my face
There are no words that could describe how I miss you
and I miss you everyday
yeah

and I'm never gonna leave your side
and I'm never gonna leave your side again
still holding on girl
I won't let you go
I lay my head against your heart
I know I'm home
I know I'm home
I know I'm home

and I'm never gonna leave your side
and I'm never gonna leave your side again
still holding on girl
I won't let you go
cos when I'm lying in your arms
I know I'm home

VALERIE forwarded this:

FOR 70s AND 80s BABIES ...the list's super long. jus gonna include those that i was involved. for 80s babies.

1. You grew up watching He-man, MASK, Transformers, Silver Hawk and MickeyMouse. Not to forget, Ninja turtles, My Little Pony and Smurfs too.

Ya, SMURFS!!! I'm a smurf-idol, even got their mattress. MASK. TRANSFORMERS. NINJA TURTLES. GHOST BUSTERS (if that's the correct spelling). POWER RANGERS. I don watch My Little Pony lah.

2. You grew up brushing your teeth with a mug in Primary school during recess time. You will squat by a drain with all your classmates beside you, and brush your teeth with a coloured mug.The teachers said you must brush each side 10 times too.

Yes, I was under that scheme but no, I don squat by the drain. There was a very long sink. So man fan to brush that many times.

3. You know what SBC stands for.

I can't recall now though. I knew its existence then but wonder if I really know what it stands for then. Singapore Broadcasting C....

4. You pay 40 cents for Chocolate or Strawberry MILK every week in class.

Don't recall that. Drinks cost 30cents then though.

5. You find your friends with pagers and handphone cool in Secondary school.

Not really. Found it a chore to carry them. But now, I might not survive very well without my handphone, perhaps ok if it's just for abt 3 to 5days.

6. SBS buses used to be non-airconditioned. The bus seats are made of wood and the cushion is red. The big red bell gives a loud BEEP when pressed. There are colourful tickets forTIBS buses. The conductor will check fortickets by using a machine which punches a hole in the ticket.

Don't recall them punching a hole, but they did check. Oh and it was very cheap for a bus journey then. 35cents?

7. Envelopes given to us to donate to Sharity Elephant every Children's Day.

Yup, I'll put in $2 and sealed it tight, proudly, knowing that that $2 will be for good cause.

8. You've probably read Young Generation magazine. You know who's Vinny thelittle vampire and Acai the constable.

Not forgetting BOOKWORM too.

9. You were there when they first introduced MRT here. You went for the first ride with your parents and you would kneel on the seat to see the scenery.

Nope, not that old. MRT was constructed on the year I was born if not mistaken.

10. Movie tickets used to cost only $3.50.

Nope. Uncertain too. I don have to pay at that time either.

11. Gals are fascinated by Strawberry Short Cake and Barbie Dolls.

Ya, I got a book on Strawberry Short Cake, not Barbie Dolls though. They are just dolls, even till now.

12. You learn to laugh like The Count in Sesame Street.

13. You longed to buy tibits called Kaka (20 cents per pack), and DingDang (50 cents per box), that had a toy in it and it changes every week not forgetting the 15 cents animal crackersand the ring pop, where the lollipop is the diamond on the ring.

Yup, confession time. I'm guilty of that.

14. You watched TV2 (also known as Channel 10) cartoons because Channel 5 never had enough cartoons for you.

15. KFC used to be a high class restaurant that serves food in plates and let you use metal forks and knives.

That was why I first fell in love with KFC. Fast-food with metal forks and knives.

16. The most vulgar thing you said was asshole and idiot and THE MOST EXTREME WAS 'super white'...you just couldn't bring yourself to say the hokkien relative.

Nope. Never guilty of all that. Swear that I swore those.

17. Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, The Three Investigators, Famous Five and Secret Seven are probably the thickest story books you ever thought you have read. Even Sweet ValleyHigh and Malory Towers.

Hardy Boys, Nacy Drew, Famous Five, Sweet Valley.

18. Catching was the IN thing and twist as the magic word.

I love playing Catching, Marbles, Hide-and-seek, Catch Spiders (literally). Primary times.

19. Science was fun with the balsam and the angsana being the most important plants of our lives, guppies and swordtail being the most important fish.

Ever since learning about angsana, for some reasons, I really like that plant and would always try to spot them along the pavement and showed off to my parents.

20. Who can forget Ahmad, Bala, Sumei and John, eternalized in our mindsfrom the textbooks. Even Mr Wally & Mr. Yakki. What abt Miss Lala??? AndZaki and Tini in Malay Textbooks?

21. We carry out experiments of our own to get ourself badges for being aYoung Zoologist/Botanist etc.

I always keep a lookout for the easier questions yet can still accumulate lots of stars to hit my target. So fun.

22. In Primary six you had to play buddy for the younger kids like bigsister and brother.

23. Your form teacher taught you Maths, Science and English.

24. You went to school in slippers and a raincoat when it rained, and you find a dry spot in the school to sit down, dry your feet, and wear your dry and warm socks and shoes.

I don't like soaked shoes and soaked feet.

25. School dismissal time was normally around 1 pm.

Then, it'd be home, shower, lunch, tv, nap, dinner, tv, sleep. Tutorials? Assignments? What's that?

26. There would be spelling tests and mental sums to do almost everyday.

27. Your friends considered you lucky and rich if your parents gave you $3 or more for pocket money everyday.

I was the lucky one then, but now, I'm under-allowanced.

28. Autograph books were loaded with "Best Wishes", "Forget Me Not", and small poems like "Bird fly high, hard to catch.Friend like you, hard to forget".

Yup, I got loads of that. Guess I'm still not forgotten.

29. Class monitors and prefects loved to say "You talk somemore, I write your name ah!"

Yawn, I was kinda involved in the former. And I don't like prefects in Primary times. Swear.

30. There were at least 40 people in one class.

31. You brought every single book to school, even though there was one thing called the timetable.

Only happened during the first week of school when they were teachers who'd collect the workbooks.

In School Now
Monday, October 02, 2006

I miss the days when we could just wear uniforms, carry stcks of books (hinding them in the cupboards), with thick textbooks like A-maths (not to mention that mine was murdered by someone throwing it down from the fourth level, yet it survived, miracle) and all the sciences; unlike now, reference books which most of the time I can't find them in the library. Yet I don't want to buy cuz I'll 90% be only using it for only this year and skip that next and following year. Just like now, I'm stuck in the claustrophobia library, unable to locate the mathematics reference book that I think I might need. I'm so missing my secondary and JC's libraries --- spacious (though no student is supposed to study in the lib) and 2-storied respectively. This library is so packed with tables and chairs and endless shelves of books which will require you to borrow a stool to reach the top shelf, regardless of your height. Feels hostile instead of comfort and home-ly.
Waiting for some meeting to commerce, which it never manage to start on time for some reasons (waste of time?). Firstly, there's always only a handful of people attending, where if you peek into the contact list, it's a pretty long list. Secondly, they give 20-30 minutes grace for people to stroll in, if they are any.
YAWN....Zzzzz....
